She came to the United States and to Dakota Territory with her 2 CONT parents and settled near Yankton, SD. They farmed there about 10 years and 2 CONT then moved to the Eureka, Artas SD areas for about a year before moving to 2 CONT near Herreid, where her father homesteaded. Christina had 5 brothers and 3 2 CONT sisters. 2 CONT She became a mother to Friedrich Sayler Jrs five small children the youngest 2 CONT only a few months old and a year later on MRs. Sayler's 21st birthday the 2 CONT couples first of 11 children was born. 2 CONT They Saylers lived on their farm until they retired in 1924 and moved into 2 CONT Wishek. Later, they built a larger home with 3 rooms down- 2 CONT stairs and 3 rooms upstairs. They did their own work, even made their own 2 CONT plaster of cow manure and straw. They first homesteaded near Artas, SD. At the age of 17 he left 2 CONT home to work for the Soo Line railroad at Braddock, ND, and to the community 2 CONT of Wishek, ND in 1905. 2 CONT After locating in Wishek he went to work for C.H. Suess who was managing the 2 CONT North Star Lumber Co. His salary was thirty dollars per month of which 2 CONT thirteen was paid to Mrs Jennie Hill for room and board. As a result of this 2 CONT first job in the lumber business, Fred became very interested in the business 2 CONT and was soon promoted to Manager. In 1927, Mr Sayler started his own lumber 2 CONT business and shortly thereafter he bought out his competitors. The name of 2 CONT the firm was changed to Sayler Lumber Co. In 1945 he retired from the lumber 2 CONT business with his children taking over the business. 2 CONT After his retirement from the business he started a development project in 2 CONT the city which was the start of several new business places and many new 2 CONT homes. In 1952 he joined together with three of his sons, Walter, Arthur, 2 CONT and Roy to purchase the Security State Bank and served on the board of 2 CONT directors of the bank for 21 years retiring in 1972. Throught his years, 2 CONT Fred has always been active in civic and community affairs. 2 CONT Fred was a charter member of the Congregational church which was organized in 2 CONT 1912. He was treasurer for 24 years, and served as Chairman of the county 2 CONT Welfare board for several years. He also served on the Wishek School Board 2 CONT and as Alderman a number of times and a member of the Local Red Cross 2 CONT Chapter. During this time he fought in the Tunisian Campaign in North Africa 2 CONT and on Mar 10 1943 he was captured by the troops of Rommel's 42nd Panzer 2 CONT Division. He spent six months in various prisoner of war camps in Africa, 2 CONT Sicily, and Italy. In September of 1943 he escaped from the prison and spent 2 CONT 7 months behind the enemy lines, living in various farm buildings, caves, and 2 CONT in the hills. Food during this time was obtained from sympathetic farm 2 CONT families. The last four months of this time was spent in one area living in 2 CONT the same cave at night and foraging for food in the day time. He was able to 2 CONT make his way through the enemy lines and on April 9 1944 returned to Allied 2 CONT lines, being sent back to the States to finish his tour of duty and being 2 CONT discharged in Sept of 1945. Their first 2 CONT children, Henry, Emma and Katharine were born here and another baby born 2 CONT after Katherine which died in infancy. The next child Louie was born born in 2 CONT 1897 in North Dakota as well as 5 more children. There was one more child, 2 CONT date unknown. Sometime before 1897 the family moved to Wells, County, ND> 2 CONT Obituary of Ludwig in Bowdon Guardian Newspaper 2 CONT Ludwig Sayler, a well to do farmer who lives about nine miles north of Bowdon 2 CONT commited sucide Tuesday afternoon, Jul r. As no cause has yet been found for 2 CONT this most ignoble act, it remains a mystery even to the members of the 2 CONT family. It seems as though, Mr Sayler had attempted to end his life in the 2 CONT barn in the morning but was found by Mrs Sayler who rescued him and took the 2 CONT rope away before it was too late. In the afternoon however, by means of a 2 CONT rope fastened to ten penny nails upstairs in the house he succeeded in 2 CONT carrying out his purpose. 2 CONT Note: another newspaper article stated that he was despondant about financila 2 CONT hardships. 2 CONT Rumors were that Ludwig suffered from depression for several years, and had 2 CONT several disappointing experiences just prior to his death. One of these 2 CONT disappointments was the purchases of 30 horses, one of those horses had a 2 CONT disease which spread thru the herd, and they lost a lot of horses. 2 CONT Court records showed claims against the estate around $400.00.
