Correspondence - Dr. Mavis Molto
- 1) Children of Johann Gottlieb Holzwarth and Luise Of (Hz II,1
in
- Leibbrandt)
- My primary source of information for the children of Johann
Gottlieb
- Holzwarth and Luise Of is the correspondence I had with two of
my
- grandmother's cousins in Germany before they died. Dorothea
Klein (1894-
- 1990), a daughter of Christine Holzwarth (born 1848), sent me
a list of the
- siblings (and the siblings' spouses) for her mother Christine.
Her
- information matches Leibbrandt, except for Elisabeth (born
1839) and
- Magdalena (born 1854). Dorothea does not include Magdalena in
her list and,
- with regard to Elisabeth, she states that Elisabeth was born
after her
- mother Christine, thus after 1848. She states further that
Elisabeth was
- married to a Matthaeus Wolf in Neuglueckstal, where she also
died.
- Dorothea Klein would have known these people since they were
her aunts and
- uncles and since Dorothea lived in Hoffnungstal from her
birth, in 1894,
- until the village was abandoned, as far as I know.
- I also corresponded with another cousin of my grandmother,
Gustav Holzwarth
- (1901-1987?), who was a son of Johannes Holzwarth (born 1860).
Gustav
- lived in Hoffnungstal after his parents returned there from
Glueckstal,
- about 1902/1903, and later came to Germany. His information is
similar to
- what Dorothea gave me and he adds that the daughter Elisabeth
was born in
- 1854 (possibly he got the date from Stumpp).
- 2) Elisabeth Holzwarth (born 1839 and/or 1854)
- I've concluded that Johann Gottlieb Holzwarth and Luise Of had
two
- daughters named Elizabeth, each presumably with a different
first and
- middle name combination, one born in 1839 and one in 1854.
Elisabeth (born
- 1839) would have been born two years before her parents
married, in 1841,
- and she was not mentioned by either Dorothea Klein or Gustav
Holzwarth.
- However, she probably died before they were born (see below)
and I don't
- see another Holzwarth family in Leibbrandt that she could have
been part
- of. Andreas Holzwarth, the father of Johann Gottlieb
Holzwarth, died in
- 1831 so could not have been her father. Elisabeth was,
further, too old to
- be the daughter of Johann Gottlieb's younger brothers. The
next oldest
- brother, Johann Jakob, was born in 1820 and his wife in 1826,
making the
- wife too young to be Elisabeth's mother. The other Holzwarth
family in
- Leibbrandt (Hk, p. 299-300) doesn't offer a possible match
either. Thus,
- the most logical parents for Elisabeth (born 1839) are Johann
Gottlieb
- Holzwarth and Luise Of.
-
- It seems unlikely, however, that Elisabeth (born 1839) married
Matthaeus
- Wolf, since there is good evidence that the younger Elisabeth
(born 1854)
- married him. If the older Elisabeth married Matthaeus Wolf,
she would have
- been 43 when she had the child Johannes who is listed in the
St. Petersburg
- records as born in 1882, in Neu Glueckstal. Also, unless she
divorced,
- Elisabeth (born 1839) must have died after her marriage to
Johann Christian
- Steinbach, since he remarried and began having children by his
second wife
- in 1861. If Elisabeth died, in the period 1857-1860, it would
explain why
- Dorothea Klein and Gustav Holzwarth did not mention her, since
Dorothea
- (born 1894) and Gustav (born 1901) lived more than thirty
years after the
- period in which Elisabeth would have been alive.
-
- 3) Magdalena Holzwarth (born 1854)
- It seems unlikely that a Magdalena, who married an August
Knecht, was the
- daughter of Johann Gottlieb Holzwarth and Luise Of, since
neither Dorothea
- Klein nor Gustav Holzwarth mentioned her. Dorothea would have
been 17 when
- Magdalena and August died, in 1911. Gustav would have been 10.
The
- Magdalena shown in Leibbrandt as a daughter of Johann Gottlieb
could have
- been the daughter of one of his brothers. One brother, Johann
David, is
- shown with a daughter Magdalena born in 1854, possibly the
same as the
- Magdalena under Johann Gottlieb, but with a different day and
month of
- birth. Another brother, Johann Michael, is shown having
children born in
- 1852 and 1856, leaving a space between for the possible birth
of Magdalena
- in 1854.
